Trochanteric Bursitis
A bursa is a sac filled with fluid located between a bone and a tendon or muscle. A bursa allows the tendon to slide smoothly over the bone. With excess friction of the bursa from tight muscles or overuse, the bursa can become swollen and inflamed. This is called bursitis. At the outside of the hip, the iliotibial band (ITB) can rub over the greater trochanter (the bony bump you feel when you lie on your side). When the bursa is inflamed, it is painful to lie on the side.

Treatment includes:
Education about the condition and how to avoid making it worse, including advice about sleeping positions.

Therapeutic modalities to improve circulation and/or reduce inflammation and pain such as ultrasound, laser, interferential current, electrical muscle stimulation, acupuncture.

Exercises to stretch or strengthen the appropriate muscles or stabilize the joint.

Manual therapy to improve the movement in the area.

Total Hip Replacement:
When osteoarthritis becomes so severe that the hip becomes non functional due to pain and/or loss of motion, a surgical procedure is performed that replaces the old worn out joint with a new artificial one.

Treatment at physiotherapy includes:
Education about the condition and how to avoid making it worse.
